What Actually Happens During a Chiropractic Adjustment

Dr. Vincent Farrar, DC, DICCP, CACCPMay 27, 20262 min read

An adjustment doesn't add anything to your body. It removes interference so your nervous system can communicate clearly and your body can function.

What Actually Happens During a Chiropractic Adjustment

We've arrived at the payoff, and it's simpler than most people expect. If health is your natural state, innate is the drive, your nervous system is the pathway, and interference is the blockage, then the adjustment is the one thing that follows: we remove the blockage so your body can do its thing.

But how it works is more interesting than most people think, and it's not what the popping sound suggests.

The adjustment isn't a bone-shoving contest. It's a specific input that restores normal movement to a segment that isn't moving well, which restores an accurate signal, which lets your brain get a clean read of your body again. The input clears up, and everything the brain was building on that fuzzy signal gets a real chance to correct itself.

And that's not a metaphor. Haavik's research group put it plainly: "chiropractic care, adjusting the spine to restore spinal function, actually changes the way the brain functions." Studies have measured changes in reaction time, joint position sense, brain processing, even muscle strength, following adjustments. That's a measured effect on the nervous system, not a story we tell.

There's also a state shift that patients feel before they can explain it. When there's interference, your system tends to idle in a low-grade defense mode. Clear the interference consistently, and it gets the chance to shift toward a repair-and-recovery mode instead.

And here's the language we're careful about, because it's the truth. We don't heal you. What we do is remove the obstacle that was keeping your own innate intelligence from doing what it already knows how to do. There's an old line in our profession that says it best: the only thing any doctor can ever do is remove an obstacle to healing. The body does the rest. So when something improves after an adjustment, that's not us. That's you, finally getting a clear pathway.

That's the chain, start to finish: you're built for health, that health runs through your nervous system, interference gets in the way, and the adjustment clears it. Everything else we'll ever tell you is a detail hanging off those four ideas.
