122 years ago the first football game was played, the first patent for the automobile was granted and the first chiropractic adjustment was given.
Recounting the story of the first adjustment D.D. Palmer (the founder of chiropractic) stated "Harvey Lillard, a janitor, in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing 'accidental' about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained."
According to Harvey “I was deaf 17 years and I expected to always remain so, for I had doctored a great deal without any benefit. I had long ago made up my mind to not take any more ear treatments, for it did me no good. Last January Dr. Palmer told me that my deafness came from an injury in my spine. This was new to me; but it is a fact that my back was injured at the time I went deaf. Dr. Palmer treated me on the spine; in two treatments I could hear quite well. That was eight months ago. My hearing remains good."
Although this was the first adjustment, it was not the founding of the chiropractic principle. The fact that the nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body has existed since God breathed life into man. It was His genius design to have the nervous system, the master control system, to be completely surrounded by bone. D.D. Palmer just abided by this principle and utilized the principle
The spinal column is not only designed to protect but to optimize the function of the nervous system
Proper spinal motion and alignment is imperative for your body to function the way it was designed allowing you to live life to YOUR fullest potential.
However, just like Harvey Lillard we place stressors (physical, mental, and chemical) on our body that overcome our bodies’ resistance to that force. This results in subluxation. Subluxations are when a vertebrae of the spine becomes displaced and fixated. This interferes with the optimal function of the brain and most or all other organs of the body because of the incredibly brilliant stress response of our body.
God designed our bodies in order to best be able to survive when under attack. This stress response was designed for short term success until the stressor was gone. Subluxations place a long term stress on our nervous systems which cause neurological and hormonal changes.
This is why Harvey Lillard was able to get adjusted and his hearing was able to return. This is why the second chiropractic adjustment helped a person with heart disease. Chiropractic utilizes the structure of the spine in order to optimize the function of the nervous system.
Chiropractors are doctors of the nervous system, not doctors of back pain and neck pain.
As citizens of the United States we regularly check every system of our bodies EXCEPT our nervous system. Since the nervous system is the most important system of our body, it is crucial that we start checking this system regularly.
Please be sure to be checked by a neurological, subluxation based chiropractor today to ensure that your nervous system does not have any interference in it.
Be sure to come into Sláinte Chiropractic today to be checked for subluxation and to celebrate chiropractic's birthday with a piece of cake!
