At a time when the current healthcare system has convinced us that we are simply subject to our genes rather than our choices, we want to help empower women who are looking to become pregnant, or women who are already pregnant. Chiropractic care has many benefits for all people, but here are some of the benefits of chiropractic care for pregnant women:
1. Reduction of in-utero constraint which blocks proper motion of the baby. Pregnancy is a beautiful process in which many changes happen in the mom’s body in order to allow the baby to grow in her body. One of the changes that occurs is an increase in the hormone relaxin. By the name, I’m sure you are able to tell that this helps relax the ligaments in the mom’s body in order to allow her to move properly in order for the baby to assume the right position.
Sometimes during pregnancy, the mom will have a subluxation in her pelvis which restricts the motion of her pelvis. When this happens, something called in-utero constraint can happen. This is when the mothers ligaments have stressed placed on them in such a way that they are unable to release and allow the baby to rotate.
Dr. Bridget is trained in the Webster technique which utilizes a gentle, and specific correction of the spine and pelvis to allow increase the motion and reduce the stress on mom’s frame. This allows the baby to turn head down to be primed for delivery. According to a 2002 study from the Journal of Manipulative Physical Therapy, there was an 82% success rate in reducing the in-utero constraint.
2. Reduction of low back pain. Low back pain during pregnancy is very common due to the increase load the mother has to carry. The mom’s spine undergoes changes in order to help accommodate the baby. Many times this results in low back pain.
According to a study from the journal Spine, 76% of women reported some low back pain at some point during their pregnancy. That is 3 out of 4 women! So low back pain is definitely common, but it may not be normal. A study performed in 2006 studied the effects of chiropractic care on pregnant women who had low back pain. Of the 17 women in the study, 16 demonstrated clinically significant improvement AND there were no side effects reported with the care.
3. Reduced labor times. Yes, you read that correctly...reduced labor times!!!! Chiropractic care helps prepare the mom’s body for birth by ensuring that the body is moving and aligned properly. This correction helps improve the nervous system connection between the mom and the baby which allows for a smoother birth transit. With mom well in tuned with baby’s position and needs, the birth process is less stressful for both.
A study from 1994 showed that first time moms who underwent chiropractic care had 25% shorter labor times, and moms on subsequent pregnancies had 31% shorter labor times. , Chiropractic care reduces the stress and tension in the body which helps prepare mom to have a a quicker and less painful birth.
Chiropractic care has such a profound effect on all people, because it helps reduce interference to the nervous system which controls and coordinates all other functions in the body. Chiropractic adjustments help improve the connection between your brain and your body by reducing the stress that subluxations cause in your nervous system.
